The Learning Paths

What training options does CCI offer?
There are three certification paths and the option to purchase individual modules without a certification outcome: Certified Cryptocurrency Investigator (CCI) — Foundational. Modules 1–5. Outcome: CCI credential. Price: $999. Individual modules also available. Certified Cryptocurrency Investigator Advanced (CCIA) — Advanced. Modules 6–10. Outcome: CCIA credential + CCI-E on completing Module 8. Price: $1,199. Individual modules also available. Master Cryptocurrency Investigations (MCI) — Complete program. Modules 1–10. Outcome: CCI, CCI-E, and CCIA credentials. Price: $1,999 (best value). Individual Modules — Any single module. Starting at $99 per module. No credential outcome except Module 8, which grants the CCI-E certification.
Which path is right for me?
If you are new to cryptocurrency investigation or want to build a solid foundation, start with the CCI (Modules 1–5). It covers everything from how cryptocurrency works through to blockchain forensics, and earning the CCI credential is the most direct way to demonstrate competence in the field. If you already have the CCI or solid working experience in crypto investigation, the CCIA (Modules 6–10) takes you into specialized areas including DeFi, advanced Ethereum, and hacks and exploits. If you want the complete program upfront, the MCI (Modules 1–10) includes both the CCI and CCIA credentials on completion and is more cost-effective than buying each path separately. Individual modules are available if you want to focus on a single topic area without committing to a full certification path. Note that individual module purchases do not include access to a final exam or a credential.
Can I start with individual modules and upgrade to a full certification later?
Yes. If you purchase individual modules and later decide you want the full CCI certification, you can purchase the remaining modules or the full bundle. Contact us at support@cryptoinvestigatortraining.com and we can work out the best path forward based on what you have already purchased.
What is the difference between the CCI and the CCIA?
The CCI (Modules 1–5) is the foundational certification. It covers how cryptocurrency works, how criminals use it, how to trace it, and how to conduct blockchain forensic analysis. It is designed to give investigators and compliance professionals the practical grounding they need to work crypto cases. The CCIA (Modules 6–10) builds on that foundation with advanced and specialized content: advanced Bitcoin concepts, DeFi and decentralized exchanges, advanced Ethereum investigation, hacks and exploits, and compliance and risk management. It is intended for professionals who are already working in the field and want to go deeper. Completing the CCI first is strongly recommended before taking the CCIA, though practitioners with equivalent hands-on experience can contact us to discuss whether starting with the advanced modules is appropriate.
What is the MCI (Master Cryptocurrency Investigations)?
The MCI is the complete program, covering all 10 modules and including both final exams. Completing the MCI earns you both the CCI and the CCIA credentials. It is the most comprehensive training available in the field and is a strong choice for teams that need consistent, verifiable expertise across all areas of cryptocurrency investigation, or for individuals who want to be fully credentialed from the outset. Purchasing the MCI is more cost-effective than buying the CCI and CCIA paths separately.
Do individual modules come with a certificate?
Individual modules are available for purchase and can be taken without committing to a full certification path. Most do not include a final exam or earn a credential. The exception is Module 8, Advanced Ethereum (CCI-E), which is a standalone certification comprising three sub-modules — completing it earns you the CCI-E certificate. The CCI, CCIA, and MCI credentials are each earned separately by passing their respective final exams.

About CCI

What is covered in the core CCI modules (1 through 5)?
The five core modules take you from foundational knowledge through to active investigative techniques:
  • Module 1: Introduction to Cryptocurrency. How cryptocurrency works, the different types of crypto, how transactions are recorded on the blockchain, and the characteristics of legitimate versus illicit use.
  • Module 2: The Bitcoin Trail. How Bitcoin is mined, common Bitcoin-based criminal schemes, and the analytical tools investigators use to trace it.
  • Module 3: Cryptocurrency and the Criminal Element. Peer-to-peer exchanges, real-world criminal use patterns, and investigative techniques used in practice.
  • Module 4: The Dark Web. How dark web marketplaces operate, how they interact with blockchain transactions, and how investigators connect on-chain activity to real-world actors.
  • Module 5: Blockchain Forensics. Forensic analysis of blockchain data, identifying illicit activity, and gathering evidence suitable for investigative and legal use.
What is covered in the advanced CCIA modules (6 through 10)?
The five advanced modules go deeper into specialized areas:
  • Module 6: Advanced Cryptocurrency Concepts. Bitcoin transaction protocols, clustering methods, obfuscation techniques, and evolving Bitcoin protocols.
  • Module 7: DeFi and Decentralized Exchanges. How DeFi protocols work, the risks they introduce, and how investigators navigate decentralized exchange activity.
  • Module 8: Advanced Ethereum (CCI-E). Ethereum architecture, ERC-20 tokens, smart contracts, proof-of-stake mechanics, and Ethereum investigation techniques. Successful completion grants the CCI-E credential.
  • Module 9: Hacks and Exploits. Attack vectors used against blockchain projects and crypto users, including phishing, social engineering, infrastructure attacks, and smart contract exploits.
  • Module 10: Compliance and Risk Management. Regulatory frameworks, risk assessment methodologies, and compliance program design for digital asset environments.
Do I need a technical background?
No. The course is beginner-friendly, designed for investigators, compliance professionals, legal practitioners, and academics regardless of their technical background. Complex concepts are explained from the ground up throughout the curriculum.
Who is this training designed for?
CCI is built for anyone working at the intersection of cryptocurrency and financial crime or digital asset risk. That includes law enforcement investigators, financial crime analysts, AML and compliance professionals, government and regulatory agency staff, prosecutors and legal professionals, and university students and academics in related disciplines.
Is CCI relevant outside of North America?
Yes. CCI is taken by professionals globally and the content applies regardless of jurisdiction. The investigative techniques, blockchain forensics skills, and financial crime concepts are relevant to practitioners worldwide.
What makes CCI different from other crypto certifications?
CCI was designed by investigators for investigators. The content is grounded in real case work and practical techniques, not academic theory. It is listed on the CISA National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS) framework and is used by law enforcement agencies, government bodies, universities, and financial institutions globally. The training is platform-agnostic — it builds foundational knowledge applicable across various tools and platforms. The curriculum covers the full investigation stack, from understanding how crypto transactions work through to blockchain forensics, dark web analysis, and evidence gathering for prosecution.
Will CCI help me get a job?
Yes, it may. CCI is recognized by employers in law enforcement, financial compliance, cybersecurity, and related fields. The credential signals practical knowledge and commitment to the field, which carries real weight in hiring decisions. We are regularly approached by recruiting firms, HR departments and various agencies to verify member credentials. We will also provide written confirmation of completion in addition to the certificate upon request to further support job applications.

Completing the Course

How long does each path take to complete?
The CCI (Modules 1–5) takes approximately 9–10 hours to complete. CCIA takes approximately 12–14 hours. The full MCI (Modules 1–10) takes approximately 20–25 hours. All training is self-paced with no scheduled sessions or deadlines within the course.
How is the course delivered?
The course is delivered online, on-demand. Participants work through the modules at their own pace and have 12 months to complete the course. Extensions are not permitted. It is not possible to print out the course materials.
How is the course structured?
Each module is broken into individual lessons. At the end of each lesson there is a short quiz to reinforce what you have covered. Each module ends with a module test. Once you have completed all the modules in your chosen path, you sit the final exam for that path. Passing the final exam earns you the credential.
Do I have to complete the modules in order?
Each module builds on the one before it, so working through them in sequence gives you the best learning experience. If you are enrolled in a learning path (CCI, CCIA, or MCI), you will be required to complete each module before proceeding to the next.
Is there a time limit on any of the tests?
No. There is no time limit on individual lessons, module tests, or the final exam. Take as long as you need and complete them across as many sessions as you like.
What format are the exam questions?
The final exam consists primarily of multiple choice questions, with some true or false and matching questions. All questions are drawn from material covered in the course. Nothing on the exam will be unfamiliar if you have worked through the modules.
What score do I need to pass?
You need to score 80% or above to pass the final exam and earn the credential.
What happens if I fail the final exam?
You can retake the final exam as many times as you need at no additional cost. The only requirement is that you pass within 12 months of your purchase date.
Can I access the course material after I finish?
Yes. You have access to your account and all purchased course material for 12 months from your purchase date. After 12 months, access ends automatically. If you want to retain access, you can repurchase through your account at any time.

Certification and Your Credential

How do I receive my certificate?
Once you pass the final exam, your personalized digital certificate will be immediately available within the learning platform and is available to be downloaded any time following completion. Physical copies are not available.
Do the CCI, CCIA, or MCI credentials expire?
No. The credentials do not expire. That said, cryptocurrency investigation is a fast-moving field and we recommend revisiting the curriculum periodically to stay current with new techniques, tools, and criminal methods.
Is CCI accepted for CPE or continuing education credits?
Currently, it is not.
How can my credential be verified?
CCI credentials are verified directly through us. If an employer, agency, or institution needs to confirm your certification, they can contact us at support@cryptoinvestigatortraining.com with your full name and date of completion and we will confirm your credential status.

Teams and Group Training

How does group licensing work?
Group purchases are available for teams of 3 or more. Once your order is confirmed, we will enroll the participants into the online training portal. Seats are valid for 12 months from the purchase date.
Which payment methods are accepted for teams?
Wire transfer and credit card payments are accepted. We can issue an invoice upon request. Contact us at support@cryptoinvestigatortraining.com to arrange the billing method that fits your organization's procurement process.
Which learning path is best for teams?
That depends on what your team needs. For most law enforcement, government, and compliance teams building capability from the ground up, the CCI (Modules 1–5) is the right starting point. It gives everyone a consistent, credentialed foundation. For teams that already have foundational knowledge and want advanced skills, or for organizations that want to credential the full program from the outset, the MCI (Modules 1–10) is the most efficient and cost-effective option. Contact us if you are unsure which path fits your team and we can help you work it out.
Can we track how our team is progressing?
Progress reports are available upon request.
What if we need more than 12 months to roll out training?
Once a user is enrolled in the course, they have 12 months to complete it. To avoid course expiry, it's best to enroll users when they have the time to commit toward completing the course. Contact us before seats expire and we can discuss options.
Is on-site or in-person training available?
All CCI training is delivered online and on-demand. In general there are no in-person or live instructor sessions, however our training partners can offer in-person training in certain jurisdictions.
